This photo was made on a March morning when a dense fog obscured nearly everything from easy vision. Seeing the potential to create images reflecting an air of mystery, I drove the back roads near my northern Virginia home looking for suitable subjects. This photo is one product of my work that day.

The converging lines of the fences and the road easily lead to the trees, whose dimmed outlines convey the mystery so evident that morning. However, the point of central attention to which the converging lines direct the eye is not the trees but the spot of pure lightness encircled by the trees’ branches. To me, this suggests that the road is leading from the known present into the unknown future. It makes me wonder what lies ahead, both farther down the road and further into the future. The gentle, calming tones of the print are an open invitation to ponder what may yet come.
Although the original photo was made in color, the simplicity of the scene called for a similar treatment in the print. Choosing to render the photo in black & white tones reduces the image to its basic elements, varying shades of gray, which wonderfully reflect the mood present on that day, in that scene.
I’m drawn to images of this sort, that are not overly complicated and that invite contemplation and internal exploration. I’m especially fond of representing scenes in black & white, and this image presents a perfect opportunity for that choice.
