By the Light of the Moon

The other night, as I was outdoors bringing in firewood to warm the night, I happened to look eastward and saw a brilliant, large, full moon through the bare limbs of a neighboring maple. At once, I saw an opportunity to create an image, which you see here, of the moon embraced by the limbs of that tree.

The sky was not yet dark. But the moon was bright. As I viewed the scene, I had in mind creating a black & white image, with the tree limbs almost entirely black and the sky sufficiently dark to emphasize the brightness of the moon.

Starting in Adobe Lightroom, I opened On1 Effects 2026 and converted the image to B&W. I then saw that the image had considerable noise. It had been photographed at ISO 3200 and was cropped so the grain was magnified. I applied On1’s denoise feature, which cleared up the image considerably. I then darkened the sky and enhanced the brilliance of the moon, which resulted in the image you see here.

I’m happy with the result. I made a 16 x 20 print to hang on my study wall, to remind me of that magical moment in the twilight.

The photo, like all the images posted on this site, is available as a print. See the ordering instructions at positivepix.net/photos and contact me if you are interested in obtaining a copy.
